Description
Did you know that Palazzo Barberini, the urban villa, was purchased by the most prestigious member of the Barberini family, Maffeo Barberini, who went down in history for being elected Pope in 1623 with the name of Urban VIII? The pontiff is not only remembered for the XIII Jubilee, the practice of nepotism or the condemnation of Galileo Galilei, but also for the importance he had in the spread of the Baroque. This capricious and imaginative artistic movement quickly surpassed the Italian borders and prevailed throughout Europe. Discover the Palazzo Barberini, a splendid Baroque building in Rome, home to the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, which houses more than 1,400 works by great artists. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, Palazzo Barberini was capable of surpassing in beauty the most luxurious residences of the Roman nobility of the seventeenth century. Admire the numerous pictorial works from the 13th to the 18th century, created by very famous artists such as Raphael, Filippo Lippi, Bernini, Borromini, Caravaggio, and many others. The collection is very rich in masterpieces, among which the Fornarina by Raphael stands out for its notoriety. Among the various sumptuously decorated rooms, there is the large central hall, which occupies the entire height of the building. In the ceiling of the hall, one can contemplate a monumental fresco by Pietro da Cortona, which offers one of the best examples of Baroque illusionism.Includes
